Misal Pav Recipe | How To Make Maharashtrian Misal Pav Recipe/ Showmerecipe.

Maharashtrian dish,  made from sprouted moth beans. That is topped with spicy gravy, fresh onion and farsan. This is served with pav. Misal pav is popular Maharashtrian breakfast and Mumbai street food. Can be served as Breakfast / snack or meal. 

Ingredients 

For Usal:
• 2 cups Sprouted matki (Moth beans) / any sprouts
• 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
• Salt to taste

For Kat / Raasa (thin Spicy Gravy):

  • 1 onion -finely chopped
  • 1 tomato finely chopped 
  •  2 green chillies -finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Ginger chopped 
  • 1 tsp garlic chopped 
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi)
  •  2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala powder 
  •  1 - 2 tbsp Oil
  •  1/2 cup coconut Dry (Grated or cut to small pieces)
  •  to taste Salt 

To serve:

  •  Ladi pav or pav Buns or slice bread 
  •  1-2 Onions very finely chopped
  •  Coriander leaves, very finely chopped
  •  Lemon ,cut into small wedges
  • • Farsan / Mixed Namkeen / Mixture. 

To prepare Matki Usal:- 

Prepare sprout Matki - 

  1. Wash and soak matki(moth beans) for 6-7 hrs in water and wash it once with fresh water and drain the excess water.
  2. Keep it closed as such in a warm place or tie in a muslin cloth and keep in hot case or use a sprout maker to make sprouts.It will take 12-15 hrs. 
  3. Steam the matki sprouts in cooker with a pinch of salt and turmeric powder take four whistle. 

To prepare Kat / Tarri / Rasa (Thin Spicy Gravy):- 

  1. Dry roast dry coconut pieces. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and add chopped onion,garlic and chopped ginger.Fry until they turn slight golden brown in colour, add tomato,fry till mushy.
  2. Switch off and cool completely.  Once cool, grind coconut and onion tomato mix.Grind to a very smooth paste. 
  3. Again take a pan and add 2 tbsp of oil. 
  4. Add ground paste.
  5. Fry for a minute, add red chilli powder,  turmeric powder, salt to taste.
  6. Add sprouts and stir nicely.
  7. Add water boil it (water add as per required for gravy).
  8. Boil it and simmer it for fifteen minutes. 

To serve Misal Pav:- 

  • In a deep bowl / plate add 1 ladle of Matki Usal.
  • Pour 1 ladle of piping hot Tarri/Kat (gravy) on top it.
  • Sprinkle finely chopped onions and coriander leaves.
  • Add a layer of mixed farsan or namkeen according to your wish.
  • Serve them hot hot with pav (buns) and a lemon piece.  

Note:

  •  If you prefer the toasted pav then you can toast on tava with little oil with similar method that we do for pav bhaji.
  • Usal is usually very spicy (hot). However, I’ve made it according to my family’s taste.
  • It is usually served as breakfast can also be served as a meal.
